Professor Baback Yazdani

Executive Dean of NBS

As the university’s lead architect, interior designer and landscaper, the multi-million-pound refurbishment of Nottingham Trent University's Postgraduate Centre has been delivered to the highest standard, marking a significant advancement in educational facilities.

The project showcases local investment and innovation in design, offering a state-of-the-art learning environment that blends advanced educational technology with a focus on student wellbeing and environmental sustainability.

The refurbishment project was characterised by a meticulous approach to project management and design execution. The project team maintained close coordination with the client and the main contractor throughout the process. This collaboration was facilitated by engaging specialised consultants and holding regular design team meetings, which were crucial for maintaining alignment with the project's evolving scope and objectives.

To ensure that the project adhered to the highest standards, regular site visits were conducted. These visits allowed the team to monitor the ongoing construction progress and provided opportunities to address any queries or issues that arose onsite promptly. This proactive approach helped in mitigating risks and ensured that project milestones were met according to plan.

Understanding the intended use of the space across different levels was central to the project. The team dedicated significant effort to adapt the design as new constraints emerged, ensuring that each area was optimised for its specific function. To aid in this, room data sheets were meticulously prepared, detailing the layout, furnishings, and functionality of each space. These sheets were instrumental in helping the client visualise the end result, ensuring transparency and satisfaction with the evolving design solutions.

Today, new technologies and customisable study areas in the Nottingham Trent University postgraduate centre provide students with the ability to tailor their learning experiences, reflecting a commitment to flexibility and the specific needs of postgraduate students in the modern educational landscape.

“This project was a huge success and demonstrates how working collaboratively with local consultants and contractors you can achieve something very special. The project was delivered on time, within budget and to the right quality. The refurbishment and re-use of an existing building continues to demonstrate our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, in a sustainable and responsible manner.” - Umesh Desai Director of Estates.
